The Trident Memorial Window

On Sunday June 16th 1972 the B.E.A Trident Papa India crashed close to the A30 by Birch Green Staines, killing all 118 passengers and crew. After 32 years a memorial window to the tragedy was installed in St Mary’s Church on Friday 18th June 2004. The Revd Michael Colclough, Bishop of Kensington blessed the window during a moving service when the church was full of local dignitaries, relatives, emergency service representatives and ordinary Staines inhabitants.

”We are gathered today to remember those who lost their lives and the nobility of those who rushed to help, and indeed, risked their own lives.”

Sue and Michael Dickinson, of Artemis Decorative Glass, created this window, like the one above the font. The 118 stars in its border represent those who died. The dove depicts flight and also symbolises peace. The trees and fields below represent the crash site and Staines Moor. BA, British Airports Authority and Spelthorne Council paid for the window. They have also provided a memorial garden, which you will find in the Moormede Recreation Ground in Waters Drive.
